Abstract : Background: Acitretin treatment is frequently associated reversible, dose- related side effecs. Recent studies ciaimed that combining vitamin E with high- dose isotretionoin ameliorated isotretinion induced effects. Objective: The purpose of this clinical trial study was to determine the effect of a fixed or adjusted dose of vitami E on the side effecs of acitretin for treatment of certain types of psoriasis and P.R.P, E. Verruciformis, lamellar ichthyosis and darier's disease. Methods: Fifty five subjects were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment programs with acitretin (0.7-1 mg/kg/d) together with either vitamin- E (13 IU/Kg/day) or alone for 3 months. The incidence of side effects of acitrecin in two groups were assessed. Results: The study was completed in thity nine patients. Vitamin E (13 IU/Kg/day) did not decreased the incidence of side effects associated with acitretin (0.7-1 mg/kg/day). Conclusion: Vitamin E did not significantly ameliorate retinoid side effects when combined with 0.7-1 mg/kg of acitretin in treatment of psoriasis, P.R.P (Pityriasis rubra pilaris), E.V (Epidemodysplasia verruciformis), Lamellar Ichthyosis and darier's disease.
