Intrpduction: Tennis elbow is a common disease affecting the elbow in the middle age. 90 of patients are cured by the use of conservative treatments. In the past, emphasis was made on the use of long arm splints in treament of patients with tennis elbow; however, recent studies have doubt on the use of this method of treatment in the light of the complications arising from the application of splints. The results of using long arm splints in treatment of tennis elbow have been examined in the current study.MATERIALS AND METHODSThis is a case series non- randomized clinical trial involving 25 patients treated with long arm cast- splints, and 25 patients treated without the use of splint. Local coricosteroid injections and oral NSAIDs were administered for all patients . The two groups were compared in the third week, third month and sixth month of treatment in respect of the presence of local tenderness and pain in passive flexion test of wrist and fingers against resistance.RESULTSThe patients in the case and control groups had mean ages 43.6 ▒ 7.2 and 43.6 ▒ 6 years, respectively. All patients in this study suffered from pain and tenderness in the origin of forearm extensor muscles and exacerbation of pain upon passive flexion of wrist and fingers against resistance prior to treatment. By using of statistically analysis test of repeated measures of ANOVA (under SPSS 9 software),no meaningful difference was seen in third week, third month and sixth month (Pvalue =0.32),and no meaningful difference was seen in results of our tests of : 1i presence of local tenderness, 2o pain in passive flexion of wrist and fingers against resistance between two groups: patients using splint and without splint (Pvalue =0.78).DISCUSSIONAfter a follow-up period of six months, this study demonstrated no meaningful difference between the groups treated with and without long arm splints in respect of amelioration of symptoms. Given the similarity of the two populations upon the start of the study,as well as the complications associated with the use of long arm splints,i.e.reduced range of motion of elbow, ineffective daily use of the recommended in treament of patients with tennis elbow..
