Abstract : Introduction: One approach to the study of learning and memory has its focus the attempt to find out drugs to improve declining memory. High incidence of adolescents and adults suffering from memory disorders has recently aroused interest in managing signs and symptoms of memory disorders and dementia. The gum resin of Boswellia serrata (Frankincense) has recently attracted the attention of scientific community in Iran. According to traditional medicine documents and religious references, Frankincense has been used for increasing memory power. Many Iranian pregnant women consume Frankincense for enhancing power of learning and memory of their progeny. On the other hand, recent pharmacological studies have been demonstrated that Boswellic acids have anti-proliferative, anti-tumor and anti-carcinogenic activities.This study was designed to achieve a more complete understanding of the effect of Frankincense on offspring learning and memory power and likely neuroanatomical changes in hippocampus as an important center in learning and memory processes and a structure with prolonged neurogenesis in brain.Materials and methods2 months-old male Wistar rats whose mothers were given orally aqueous extract of the Boswellia serrata (0.1g/kg/day) during gestation/lactation period (3weeks) were used (n=8). We investigated power of learning and memory , according to active avoidance learning test. For stereological studies the rat brains were removed and divided into hemispheres, from each hemisphere, rostral pole was cut. The posterior portion, which contained hippocampus, was taken. One hemisphere was selected randomly for estimating number of neurons, volume of hippocampus, and morphometeric analysis of hippocampal dendrites and the other for estimating volume of individual neurons and total number of hippocampal capillaries. We used an Olympus 13H2 microscope equipped with a MT12 microcator and ND281 readout, and a motorised specimen stage, for the microscopic study. Counts of neurons were made with an advanced optical fractionator for shrunken vibratome sections. The Cavalieri principle was used to estimate the reference volumes, and the individual somal volume measurement were performed by the use of the vertical rotator method..
