Abstract : Intrudtiction: Inflammatory bowel disease (113D) is a chronic idiopathic gastrointestinal disorder with no known cause or cure .Recent progress iii epidemiology and genetics of FBD has demonstrated both environmental and genetic factors play a ro[C in development of di ease. Within the biapsyehosocia] model psychological distress may contribute in the course of disease independently. This study is designed to determine whether treatment with antidepressants in LAC patients improves their signs and symptoms. Methods: 50 UC patients were randomly selected and enrolled into the clinical trial .They were divided into 2 equa( groups randomly .Ore group received imiprarnine and he other group received placebo. Patients and responsible physicians were also blinded to the sort of therapy. The depression questionnaire HArnilton depression scale) and the severity of disease questionnaire Powell-Tuck scoring systeme and LluaHty of life questionnaire (IBDQ) were administrated at baseline and the end ofweek8.The efficacy of imipramLne treatment will be assessed by improvement in these questionnaires. Results: After analyzing the data the mean Powell tuck score reduction Gn drug group was 2,9 and in placebo group was 1,3 and the Fvalue was c.G21 so this means imipramine can reduce the severity of the disease. The mean QOL score increasing in drug group was 7,64 and in placebo group was 1.2 the P-value was b,027so this means there is statistically significant di1fi re ce between therapy with drug and placebo on QOL in UC pat ents. Discussion: By regarding Co the psychological aspects of UC and this study imipraailine can decrease the symptoms of UC and improve the QOL in UC patients. The correlation be weer severity of disease and severity of depression was significant so this means ulcerative colitis is more severe in depressed patients. There is a significant correlation betveep degree of depression arid response to therapy with Imiprarn۰ne so depressed UC patients have a better response to imipramine.key words: Ulcerative colitis (UC), imipramine, Hamilton rating scale, lBDQ, Po e[]-Tuck scoring system.
