Abstract

Introduction:Chronic periodontitis (CP) has been associated with cardiovascular diseases. Recent data have shown that viral and bacterial infection may also contribute to the acute thromboembolic events. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible association between periodontitis with acute myocardial infarction.Materials and methods:We studied 28 subjects with clinically confirmed ANII and 28 matched control subjects with no evidence of AMI. All subjects were 40-65 year-old. All subjects were clinically examined and completed a medical and dental questionnaire. Attachment loss (at six sites per tooth was measured) and also number of missing teeth, as a main requirement for periodontal examination were recorded in both groups. Sample proportions were compared by SPSS software version 11.5, quantitative variables with student t- tes amount of attachmentloss and missingteethwerehigher than controlgroup(p<0.05)).But wecould not find asignificantdifference between types of MI with variables like , attachment loss and missing teeth. Discussion, Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that periodontitis may be associated with acute myocardial infarction, but we couldn't find positive association between types of myocardial infarction and variables like attachment loss and missing. To our knowledge, this is the fast study that reports the importance of periodontal health in the occurrence of acute myocardial infarction in Iranian population. Although ourfindingssuggest that patientswho atroutine dental visits demonstrateevidenceof attachmentlossaroundseveralteethcan predictably be identified as being at risk for future AM, we propose that prospective randomized studies are needed to determine this relation in a larger population..
