Abstract : Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and sexual dyfunction are common conditions in older men, with an overall prevalence of i 50 percent in men aged 50 years and above. LUTS is often caused by benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) Men withLUTS have been reported to experience sexual dysfunction, the most common aspect of witch being erectile dysfunction. The present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between ED and LUTS in men aged 50 and above. Two groups of men aged 50 and above were selected for this study. One group which was randomly selected as our control group from men without urinary tract symptoms consisted of 50 subjects. The other group who comprise the patient group, were 49 men selected from attendants of urology clinics complaining of lower urinary tract symptoms. The translated version of the IPSS questionnaire was used to determine the degree of urinary symptom in the patient group and to rule out the presence of such symptoms in the control group. The prevalence and severity of erectile dysfunction was assessed in each group using the IIEF- 5 questionnaire, a validated international questionnaire, translated in to Farsi and modified. The questionnaires were handed out personally to men who expressed consent over filling out the forms and necessary explanations were made to clarify the various aspects of the questions. Results were statistically analyzed using the Chi- square and spearman's correlation tests. The results confirm a correlation between LUTS and ED. Our results are consistent with previous conducted in Europe, North America and Asia which suggest LUTS to be an independent risk factor for ED in older men..
