Abstract : There is a large amount of pphthalmologic ilterature that states a positive correlation between the photoablation depth and the postoperative degree of corneal haze. since the postoperative application of topical mitomycin C is quite new for PRK patients, there were no studies availabe witch evaluated this correlation in presence of mitomycin C action. In order to do so this study was held. The general objective of this study was to determine any correlation between excimer laser photoablation depth and postoperative corneal haze in myopic patients that had undergone photorefractive corneal haze in myopic patients that had undergone photorefractive keratectomy procedure. And the specific objectives were assessing the mean difference between preoperative specifical equivalent refractive error in dioptre scale and the postoperative one and assessing the mean difference between preoperative BSCVA visual acuity and the postoperative one. This study was an analytic descriptive one which assessed the correlation between excimer laser photoablation depth and postoperative corneal haze. There were 126 eyes of 64 patients examined 6 months after the PRK procedure during junary 2003 to september 2004. Degree of corneal haze was scorrd in a 0 to 4 scale after examination by slitamp biomicroscope. Dioptre and BSCVA for each eye were obtained postoperativeely by an autorefractometer and E chart respectively. Preoperative values were obtained from patients records. Seventy six percent of patients were female while 24 percent were male. Mean age was 26.10 + 4.892 (mean std. deviation ). Three cases showed severe, 11 moderate, 7 minimal and 31 puncate haze, while 74 cases showed no haze formation after a six month period. There was a positive correlation between ablation depth and degree of haze spearmans. Mitomycin C seems not to change the existing correlation between the ablation depth and haze formation. Further clinical trials are needed to see whether patients with higher photoablation depths need higher doses of Mitomycin C..
