Abstract

Introduction: Plants produce a diverse array of secondary metabolites, many of which have antimicrobial activity. The 0. persica (Labiatae) s grows in South East of Iran, no previous antimicrobial investigation of the plant has been reported, however there are reports on the its antioxidant activity of the different extracts and fractions. Also, effect of Otostegia persica on naloxone-induced morphine withdrawal syndrome was studied. There are several Labiatae plants whose inhibition potential has not been investigated yet. Thus, the aim of this work was to examine the effect of the three extracts of 0. persica of the Labiatae family on several microorganisms. Methods and Materials: Aerial parts of 0. persica were collected in summer 2003 from Sistan-Baluchestan province (Iran). For preparation of hydroalcoholic extract, air-dried and powdered aerial parts of the plant (100g) were macerated with 900m1 of ethanol-water (7:3) for 48 hours. After percolation and filtering, the solution was concentrated under reduced pressure. The dried extracts were then extracted with hexane, followed by chloroform and methanol respectively. Antimicrobial activities of chloroform, hexane, and methanol extracts tested on several standard and resistant microorganisms using well plate method, MIC and MBC methods, and disk diffusion method. Results: 0. persica extracts has shown antimicrobial against Listeria monocytogens , Enterococci , Staphlococcus aureus ,and S. epidermids. Different extracts of 0. persica species exhibited significant antimicrobial activity. Hexane, chloroform, and methanolic extracts exhibited antimicrobial activity at a range of 80 me m/ to 10mglml, 40 mglml to 2.5 mglml, and 100 ,ag I ml to 12.5mg / ml respectively. The MIC for standard S. aureus is equal to 4 and MIC for S. aureus resistant is equal to 5. Interestingly the extracts showed higher antimicrobial activity on resistant S. aureus. Discussion: On the basis of the results obtained, it can be concluded that the tested extracts of Otostegia persica exhibit significant antibacterial activity. This investigation supports the idea of using plant metabolites as antimicrobial agents which can help mankind to the evolution of drug- resistant strains of microbes..
