Title: Evaluation of Seasonal variations in hospital admission for . cerebral venous and sinus thrombosis.Introduction: Cerebral vein and sinus thrombosis (CYST) is a frightening event because of the severity of the clinical manifestations and the high mortality rate, estimated to be 5 to 30 percent. Prevalence of CVST is increasing in Iran; throughout the occurrence of several adverse cardiovascular event, myocardial infarction and stroke is not randomly distributed over time, but shows definite seasonal patterns; the special pattern for other diseases such as pulmonary embolism (PE) is known; whereas the data concerning cerebral vein and sinus thrombosis (CS VT) are not conclusive, that just two letter to editor, The aim of our study was to investigate Nvhether a seasonal variation exists also for CS T. Methods: We analyzed the seasonal distribution of disease onset in Iranian cohort. of 122 consecutive CVT patients treated in two neurological centers from 2001 to 2004. In all cases, diagnosis was confirmed either by conventional an Biography or magnetic resonance imaging and MR angiography. Patients with septic CVT were excluded. We evaluated the number of new CVT cases per month and compared the distribution of new cases during the divided into subgroups by rthe distribution. of symptom onset was tested for uniformity by the chi 2 test, RESULTS: Seasonal analysis .showed (spring 27, summer 22, autumn 43, winter 30) a significantly reduced frequency of CVT events in summer and increased in autumn and winter, for the total population, men and women (p<0.05)) with two peak in September and December for the total population.CONCLUSIONS: This study shows the existence of a highly significant seasonal pattern in the occurrence of CVST, characterized by autumn and winter peak. Thus, colder months and relative hyper coagulability could be considered a supplementary high risk condition when prescribing an anticoagulant regimen..
