Abstract

Background: Postsurgical scars are frequently cosmetically and emotionally unacceptable to the patient, especially if wound healing process becomes abnormal, due to either local factors or genetic tendency, an unfavorable scar can result. In the other hand, it is much more efficient to prevent hypertrophic scars than to treat them. Different types of scars require different treatment but the best treatment is still prevention. There are a lot of non surgical methods before surgical intervention so the scar may be improved by these measures, and surgical intervention can occasionally be avoided. Methods and materials: The effect of Contractubex on the post surgical wounds on preventing hypertrophic scars was investigated using data from a randomized clinical trial study, conducted in Isfahan, Iran on 50 patients with new post appendectomy or cholecyctectomy scars. The patients were randomized into two groups 1 and 2. The groupl received Contractubex gel and group 1 patient used a lubricating gel as a placebo. We wanted the group land 2to massage the gel into the skin gently three or four times daily for two weeks on new scars.we followed both the groups patients, and patients were evaluated at 2, and 24 weeks after initiation of treatment. During the study the patients were visited three times from the point of scar vascularity, pigmentation , pliability, heigth , personal satisfactory and scar site itching. Result: Comparing the groupl and group2,it is concluded that there is not any differeces between two groups in mentioned charactristics, but there is a significant difference in scar pigmentation, pliability, scar height and personal satisfactory between visit sessions in every groups. Despite of a significant difference in total Vancouver scale score between third and first visit in groupl, but there is not any significant difference between scores in third and first visit in group2, it can be because of time limitation of the patients follow up. Conclusion: In this study we concluded that contractubex gel did not improve scar properties when compared with lubricating gel, but either contractubex gel or lubricating gel can improve the scar height, vascularity, pigmentation and personal satisfactory but pliability got worse in all the cases. Both the treatment choices had no effect on scar site itching and the end, it is important to recognize that no topical product will eliminate a scar. Key word: contractubex, wound healing, post surgical scar.
