Abstract
:
Central venous catheters (CVC) for dialysis are classified into either "acute" or "chronic" catheters, depending on whether the catheters are used for only some days or months to years. Other indication for placement of chronic central catheters is chemotherapy; therefore port catheters are another type of chronic catheters. Chronic catheters should be passed via a subcutaneous tunnel and have a cuff for tissue in-growth. Generally internal jugular veins are preferred site for inserting tunneled central venous catheter. To minimize the risk of early and late catheter related complications the goal is to place the tip of catheter at the junction of the superior vena cava (SVC) and the right atrium or within atrium (1). Several methods like landmarks (2, 3), simple formulas (4, 5), and advanced techniques.
