Abstract

The knowledge of the exact location of the Inferior Alveolar Nerve(IAN) bundle is a very important factor since this information provides knowledge about regions where safe and quick removal of bone should be possible and danger zones where special care must be used. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the mandibular third molar and the mandibular canal by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) with elimination of hard tissue. This was a cross-sectional study with convenience sampling. 94 mandibular CBCTs performed with CSANEX 3D machine (Soredex, Finland) and 3D system chosen. Vertical and horizontal relationship between the mandibular canal and the third molar depicted by 3D, panorama and cross sectional view. cross sectional view was our gold standard and other view evaluated by it. Data were analyzed with software SPSS20. statistical analysis using the chi-square test and kappa ratio performed on the recorded data and ?=0/05 was considered as significant. There were significant differences between the vertical and horizontal relation of nerve and tooth in all views (p value< 0.001). 3D and panorama views showed the nerve inferiorly and buccally than the true position in cross sectional view. The results of this study showed that in Panorama and 3D views the location of nerve was inferiorly and buccally rather than cross sectional view that was gold standard of this study.
