| Abstract

This prospective randomized controlled trial was designed to assess the effects of add-on pentoxifylline to available treatment on reduction of microalbuminuria in diabetic patients. In this study 40 diabetic patients randomised in two -member groups. Case group include patients who received 400 mg pentoxifylline pills (three times a day) besides the patients' regular medications, and control group include patients who received placebo in similar to pentoxifylline pills besides the regular medications. Age, sex, weight, height, estimated glomerular filtration rate and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio in a morning spot urine sample were measured and calculated. Patients were observed and monitored during sex months follow-up period. The mean age of patients was 53.25 ▒ 10.23 years old and 37.5 were female (15 patients). The ratio of albumin to creatinine was similar between two groups and no significant a difference was noted between cases and controls (P-value > 0.05). Patients' systolic and diastolic blood pressure and GFR at studied time points, in both case and control groups was similar differences between groups were not statistically significant (P-value > 0.05). Trend of ratio of albumin to creatinine, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and GFR in both groups were similar and no significant differences were noted between groups (P-values > 0.05). In conclusion, the results show that in patients with type 2 diabetes, pentoxifylline has not a significant additive antimicroalbuminuric effect compare with placebo; however, further clinical investigations are necessary to be done.
