Abstract

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are common in diabetic patients. This study was aimed to evaluate prevalence of FGID in Iranian diabetic patients. One thousand diabetic patients older than 18 years old and 4736 nonacademic staff were assessed in this study. All subjects were asked about the presence of five most frequent symptoms of FGID that included functional dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GRD), functional constipation, functional bloating, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) using self-administered questionnaires. Prevalence of IBS was not significantly different between diabetic patients (20.5 ) and controls (21.5 , p-value=0.48). Functional dyspepsia (24.4 versus 15.2 , P-value<<0.00011), GRD (31.9 versus 23.5 , p-value<<0.00011), and functional constipation (26.4 versus 23.5, P-value=0.042), in diabetic patients were significantly more than the controls, but functional bloating in diabetic patients was significantly lower than the controls (16.8 versus 19.7 , p-value=0.032). Among female diabetic patients, functional dyspepsia and GRD were more than female in control group. In male diabetic patients, the frequency of functional constipation and functional bloating were more than male controls, but IBS in control male was more than male diabetic patients. Also, the increased prevalence of functional dyspepsia, GRD, functional constipation and functional bloating in patients with diabetes compared with controls were associated with older age and more BMI. Our results showed that functional dyspepsia, GRD, functional constipation, are significantly more prevalent in Iranian diabetic patients than. Functional bloating in Iranian diabetic patients was significantly lower than the controls, and IBS was not significantly different between Iranian diabetic patients and controls.
