Abstract

Myopic laser refractive surgery may induce an increased corneal aberrations. The aim of this study was to compare two selected preoperative Q-values in PRK surgery on the postoperative contrast sensitivity and corneal aberrations of the myopic patients who were undergone Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).In this single-site randomized double-masked, paired-eye comparison, clinical trial 70 eyes of 35 adults with myopia and myopic astigmatism undergoing elective PRK surgery. 2 eyes of every patient randomly assigned to -0.50 or-0.35 target Q-value. The UCVA, BCVA, applantation tonometry, slit lamp evaluation, fundoscopy, wavefront aberrometry (Zwave,Bausch& Lomb), contrast sensitivity (CSV-1000( were evaluated after PRK surgery at six months. Of the initial 35 cases, 32 cases (7 male and 25 female) with mean age of 29.875+/-5.840 (Range: 21-43 years completed the study and were eligible for the final analyses. Total aberration in wavefront diameter 5mm and in 6mm; HOA in wavefront diameter 6mm; HOA without Z400 in wavefront diameter 6mm; and, contrast sensitivity of 3,6,12 CPD were not significantly different between both eyes. HOA with or without Z400 in wavefront diameter 5mm and contrast sensitivity 18 CPD were shown to be significantly better in group 1 which shows that selection of Q-value of -0.50 in the group1 resulted in less HOAs in that group. Although some refractive results were shown to be better in -0.50 target-Q value group, others were not significant. We suggest performing such studies with larger sample size.
