| Abstract

this study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of musculoskeletal manifestations in a sample of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and prediabetes and compare them between the two groups. 189 patients with type 2 DM and 125 pre-diabetic subjects were randomly selected and enrolled in this cross-sectional study. past history of rheumatologic diseases and trauma-associated musculoskeletal involvements were the exclusion criteria. demographic data adn full past history were recorded. complete musculoskeletal physical examinations were done by one rheumatologist. logistic regression analyses were employed to assess the crude and adjusted effects of risk factors on diabetes mellitus musculoskeletal manijestations (DMMMs). female/male ratio was not significantly different between diabetic and pre- diabetic patients. but diabetic patients were significantly older than the pre-diabetic ones. 83.5 percent of diabetic patients and 52.8 percentof pre-diabetic ones had at leat one musculoskeletal manifestation. the prevalence of osteoarthritis and rotator cuff tendinitis were almost two times more common. in diabetic patients than in pre-diabetic ones. multivariate logistic regression analysis showed age, sex, BMI and DM as the significant risk factors in development of DMMMs in all subjects but age of patients was the only significant factor predicting DMMMs in diabetic patients. in non diabetic patients presenting with non traumatic, non-rheumatologic musculoskeletal manifestations, pre-diabetes might be ruled out.
