Abstract

Although Infection after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is uncommon but it is followed by devastating complication. In this study we aimed to evaluate and determine relative incidence of infection and its outcomes in the patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. Methods: This descriptive- analytical cross sectional study was done on 384 patients referring to Ayatolah Kashani Hospital of Isfahan from 2010 to 2013. We recorded duration of operations, previous illnesses, type of microbial organisms, response to treatment and type of infections (The infections in patients were divided into early post-operative, chronic infection, acute hematogenous, positive intra-operative cultures according to time and symptoms) in a checklist. Results: From our cases 21 (5.9 percent) suffered from infection after operation, 336 (94.1 percent) recovered without infection. In our research, there was significant difference between gender and infection after TKA operation (P-value< 0.05) but age did not have any significant influence in occurrence of infection (P-Value> 0.05).The patients related risk factors have significant effect on infection (P value< 0.05). The sample culture of 8 subjects (38 percent) was positive; the type of microorganism was Staphylococcus aureus (G+) in 2 subjects (9.5 percent) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (G-) in 6 subjects. The fate of infected patients was full recovery in 19 (95.2 percent) and infection recurrence in 2 cases (4.8 percent). Conclusion: The majority of patients suffering from infection fully recovered through two-step revision treatment. Thus, the fate of patients has been full recovery in 90.5 percent of them.
