Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the most common cause of worldwide mortality. The present study was performed to compare the mortality rate caused by CVDs in three Iranian metropolises including Tehran, Isfahan and Arak. The reason these cities have been selected was because Isfahan and Arak have already been investigated in the interventional Isfahan Healthy Heart Program (IHHP) during 2001 to 2007. Interventional measures were implemented in Isfahan to reduce the risk factors of CVDs and ultimately reduced the related mortality. Arak city has been considered as a control group in the IHHP, and no intervention was done in this city with the above mentioned objective. As the largest city in Iran with similar conditions and criteria, Tehran was selected to be compared with the other two cities. The overall statistics of mortality caused by CVDs in the three cities were extracted and compared with coordination of the relevant organizations. The results suggested that CVD-related deaths in Isfahan relatively had a greater decline than the studied years which can be due to implementation of IHHP interventions; because, the time of implementing the mentioned program was in consistent with the studied years in this study. Tehran and Arak cities also showed a decline in total number of mortalities caused by CVDs; however, the decline was lower than Isfahan. The findings of the present study emphasized that implementing the lifestyle modification interventions is an appropriate strategy to prevent and control cardiovascular diseases and reduce the related mortalities.
