Background: statins are lipid lowering agents They have anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study is evaluation of anti-inflammatory effects of different statins in rheumatoid arthritis.Materials&Methods: 161 elligible subjects with RA enrolled. And randomly divided three groups first group was taken atorvastatin 40 mg, second group simvastatin 40 mg and third group placebo as control for 6 months. Assessment of clinical evaluation ESR,CRP, lipid profiles, AST, ALT, ALK-P and disease activity score(DAS-28) and global assessment of disease activity evaluated in months0-3-6.The data collected in 3 groups and analyzed with SPSS v.16 and p value of <0.05 was significant.RESULTS: Mean average age in placebo, and simvastatin group was 48.60+/- 13.90, 46.85+/-14.12, 48.41+/-12.67, respectively. DAS 28 score in month 0- 3 - 6 in placebo group were 5.52+/- 0.96, 3.90+/-1.10 and 3.87 +/-1.52 , respectively. In atorvastatin group was 5.36+/-1.02, 3.23 +/-1.24 and 2.81+/-1.13 ,respectively. In simvastatin group was 5.29+/-0.87, 2.75+/-1.16, 2.57+/-1.00, respectively. In DAS-28 overal in three groups were 5.39+/-0.59, 3.27+/-1.25,3.06+/-1.34 ,respectively. Average DAS-28 differences between placebo and atorvastatin groups was 0.6+/- 0.16 (p=0.00), this differences between simvastatin and placebo was 0.900+/-0.16 that was meaningful(p=0.00) but was not significant between Atorvastatin and simvastatin group(p=0.261). Conclusion: statins decrease inflammation in RA and can be used for additive treatment.
