Background: Spinal cord injury due to trauma or other injuries commonly occur among young people, especially those aged between 20-35 years have involved a lot of damage to the individual and the need to care for the long term. Some methods was used to prevention of secondary damages In the recent years such as Erythropoietin. The aim of this study was determining of neuroprotective effect of Erythropoietin in Spinal cord injury due to trauma. Material and methods: This is a clinical trial study that done in Alzahra and Kashani hospitals, Isfahan, Iran during 2013-2014. 64 patients with Spinal cord injury were sellected and all patients were given standard dose of methyl prednisolone with an initial dose of 30 mg/kg and then 5 mg/kg.Then the patients were randomly divided into two intervention and control groups. In the intervention group, erythropoietin was injected at a dose of 1000 Iu/kg as stat and for the next two days (a total of 3 doses) and in the control group, in addition to the current therapy, the normal saline was injected with a similar dose. Information about patients' muscle and sensory strength were evaluated using ASIA form on arrival, the fourth day, 3 weeks and 3 months later, and the results were recorded in the patients' profile. The obtained data were analyzed using Spss soft ware version 22 and chi square, student t-test, paired t-test and repeated measurement ANOVA statistical tests. Results: According to results of this study, all fore myography indexes in intervention and control group was improved according to repeated measurs ANOVA the trend of improvement in the two groups was similar (P>0.05). Conclusion: EPO can have a significant role in protection against to oxidative stress, but its positive impact on the recovery of spinal cord injury is still debated, and most of the studies have been on animal models. Therefore, further studies on the positive effects of erythropoietin in patients with spinal cord injury and the extent and duration of its use are required.
