| Abstract

Methamphetamine (MEH) abuse and dependence present a major global problem. while currently there are no medications approved for treating METH dependence we investigated the efficacy of adding buprenorphine in reducing the craving to methamphetamine during treatment with matrix program. this is a randomized, double blind, controlled clinical trial on 40 men of 18 to 40 years of age referred to addiction treatment center of Noor hospital to attend meetings of matrix program during december 2012 to September 2013. after screening the subjects were participated in matrix program and randomly were divided into two groups of buprenorphine and placebo. a 4-months program of intervention with buprenorphine or placebo was arranged for each group and a resident of psychiatry visite them every two weeks. demographic variables of the two groups, descriptive indices of cocaine craving questionnaire-brief (CCQ-Brief) the ratio of positive methamphetamine urine tests and the frequency of drug complications were evaluated in both groups every 2 weeds regularly and if not possible, the test happened in the 3rd or 4th week maximmum. all analyzes were performed by SPSS20 using ANOVA, Chi square and t-test. the average of indexes of CCQ-brief score except the two initial measurements, was significantly lower in the intervention group in all measurments. apart from the week 3 and 28, the ratio of positive tests has significant difference in all measurments in both groups. buprenorphine augmentation in comparison to the placebo significatly reduced the craving to methamphetamine use during treatment whth the matrix program.
