Abstract : vitamin D and bone mninerals abnormalities are one of the nonapparent late effects of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). chemotherapy, radiation and pimary disease were known as important predictors. in this study the effects of chemotherapy and chemotherpy plus radiation therapy on this complication were compared in ALL survivors. in a case control cross sectional study calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P) and also alkaline phospatse (AlK P), and compared in two groups of childhood ALL survivors: groups A (who were treated wtih chemotherapy alone) and group B (who received chemotherapy plus 1800-2400 rads cranial radiation therapy). one group including: gender, age and pubertal stage matched of their healthy siblings is considered as control group (group C). mean serum levels of Ca, P, Mg, AlK p and PTH in groups A, B and also between them and group C had no significant difference. but the mean levels of 25-OH vit D in survivors of groups A and B in comparison with control group was low and had significant differences. prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in ALL survivors was also high and more than their healthy siblings. rediation therapy had no effect on this consequence.ALL treatment is associated with increase the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in survivors. so close follow-up for prevention of complications of vitamin D deficiency in this group is recommended.
