Background: Prognostic significance of occult tumoral cells detection in patients with colorectal cancer(CRC) is not proven yet. This study was designed to find weather bone marrow(BM) and hepatic micrometastasis(MM) is associated with survival of the patients affected by CRC. Methods: 38 CRC patients who were candidates for surgical procedure were enrolled in our study. Liver and bone-marrow biopsy were performed during the surgery. The expression of CK20, a specific marker for MM diagnosis, in bone-marrow and liver was evaluated by the 2 methods of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (Rt-PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: Among 38 enrolled patients a total number of 14 micrometastasis were detected including 9 BM (23%) and 7 hepatic (18%). There was no significant difference in clinicopathological aspects and relapse rate of tumor in group with and without disseminated tumoral cells. Survival rate did not differ in group receiving neoadjuvaant chemotherapy. Conclusion: Our study did not confirm that presence of MM influences overall survival of the affected patients. Additional clinical investigations with larger number of cases are required to decide on administration of neoadjuvant therapy in CRC patients.
