| Abstract

Background: Radical cystectomy and urinary diversion can cause metabolic complications ,metabolic acidosis and decreasing bone density in patients with bladder cancer.The purpose of this study was to evaluate bone density decrease and metabolic changes in these patients.Matherials&Methods:This descriptive-analytic study was conducted on 28 eligible patients who were candidates for radical cystectomy and urinary diversion. Before surgery bone mineral density (BMD) , serum electrolytes such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium,and bicarbonate,blood and urine acidity and PTH were measured; these tests and BMD were repeated after surgery. The follow-ups were about 2.5 years) mean (timeafter surgery. The results, before and after the study,were compared and statistically expressed.Results: Patients after surgery had a lower level of calcium compared with pre-surgery period (P<0.05). The level of PTH in patients significantly increased after surgery(P<0.05).The bone density of patients significantly decreased after surgery(P<0.05).Conclusion: Patients with bladder cancer undergoing urinary diversion and radical cystectomy are prone to metabolic disorders and are at increased risk of bone fracture therefore should receive preventive treatment.
