Abstract

IntroductionMultiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which seems there is a defect in regulatory cells. It is thought that regulatory T cells expressing lymphocyte Activation Gene3 (LAG-3), and encounter effectively with the effector lymphocytes and endow a suppressor activity to these cells during the regulatory T cell homeostasis. This thesis aimed to evaluate the frequency of the peripheral blood CD4+FoxP3+LAG-3+ T cells before and after 1 month of Fingolimod treatment. Materials and MethodsBlood samples were obtained from 20 patients with Relapsing Remitting Multiple sclerosis (RRMS) before and after 1 months of Fingolimod treatment, and from 12 age-matched healthy control individuals. The frequency of regulatory T cells expressing the LAG-3 was determined by the flow cytometry method.ResultsThe frequency of the peripheral blood CD4+FoxP3+ regulatory T cells in the MS patients compared to baseline increased (P= 0.002). In addition, Fingolimod increased significantly the peripheral blood regulatory T cells expressing the LAG-3, (P= 0.005).
