Abstract

Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of liver dysfunction and elevated hepatic chemistry tests. There are many different approaches in diagnosis of NAFLD patients and according to this fact we conducted this systematic review study to determine diagnostic criteria for NAFLD and determine the normal range of liver function tests (LFT) in different publication. Methods: This was a systematic review study which is perfumed in Isfahan, Iran from July 2014 to June 2015. We used protocols which are recommended by PRISMA guideline. In this study we had an electronic search in PubMed. We used Fatty liver as our keyword. We found 997 articles and finally we extracted information's from 112 studies. Results: 21 studies evaluated patients withliver function test changesand biopsy, 19 studies used biopsy, in 16 articles authors used sonography and LFT, 9 studies used LFT, sonography and biopsy, 8 studies used sonography, 7 studies used sonography and biopsy, 4 studies evaluated patients with Liver function test changes, 2 studies evaluated LFT and body mass index (BMI), 2 studies used LFB, biopsy and hepatic proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HMRS), 1 study used LFT and HMRS and 23 used other methods. Discussion: According to our review and previous study reports we can conclude that the best diagnostic tool is liver biopsy in fatty liver patients but as it is not possible to perform biopsy in all patients LFT could help clinicians but according to some other factors we can select patients who are candidates for liver biopsy
