Abstract : Introduction: One of the newest treatment strategies which have been developed rapidly in order to improve treatment for patients with OCD is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ACT on severity of symptom and quality of life in obsessive compulsive patients. Methods: A randomized controlled trial study of 27 recently hospitalized OCD patients was conducted (14 in intervention group and 13 in control group). Intervention group were treated with ACT by a mental health counselor in 8 an hour sessions for 1 month. Data were collected from 3 questionnaire (DASS-42, The World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (short form) and Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS)) at admission and 3 months. Data were analyzed with ANOVA Repeated Measure. Results: The results showed that all the two treatments (ACT and current drug therapy) were effective in reducing total scores in the YALE and DASS (as well as subscales including depression, anxious and stress) and increasing WHO scores at post-treatment. Nevertheless, drug therapy presented a significantly greater improvement in depression score of patients than those resulting from ACT (P.V=0.005).Conclusion: The results of the present study demonstrated the patients treated with SSRIs experienced further improvement in quality of life at post-treatment as compared to those treated with ACT.
