| Abstract

Purpose: There are evidences regarding the safety and efficacy of Levisticum officinale (Lovage). However, to the authors’ knowledge there are no well-designed animal or human researches on evaluating its effectiveness on kidney stones. This study investigated the effectiveness of lovage on urine cystine level of cystinuric patients. Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial an extract of lovage was administrated to 18 cystinuric patients with a dosage of one tablespoon, two times a day, for two weeks. The level of cystine, creatinine and urine volume in a 24-hour urine sample was measured and compared before and after the trial.Results: Lovage had a significant effect on reducing the level of urine cystine and its volume (P = .02 and P = .03, respectively). Treatment with lovage had a significant effect on the level of cystine among men (P = .02). Mean of cystine level reduction after the trial was 96.9 ± 34.6 in men and 3.4 ± 27.1 in women (P = .03). Using Pearson correlation test, there was no significant relationship between age and level of urine cystine (P = .37). However, there was a significant negative correlation between body mass index and level of urine cystine (P = 0.04, r = -0.42).Conclusion: Because of its proper effect on urine cystine, lovage seems to be safe. It has a protective and positive clinical impact on reducing morbidities related to cystinuria and reducing recurrence of cystine stones formation. Also, it might be more effective if it is administrated during the early phase of this disease.
