Introduction: Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disorder in the world which vitamins and minerals deficiency can be involved in the development and exacerbation. In this study the relationship between serum level of magnesium and osteoporosis in post-menopausal women was investigated.Materials and methods:In a case-control study that was on 182 postmenopausal women were referred to the Isfahan Osteoporosis Diagnosis Center between 2015-2016 years. After determining bone density using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), were divided in three groups composed of: normal, osteopenia and osteoporosis, then serum level of magnesium in individuals were evaluated and compared among three groups. Results: Among 182 individuals who involved in this study, 51 patients (28%) were in the normal group, 67 patients (36.8%) had osteopenia and 64 patients (35.2%) were with osteoporosis. The serum magnesium levels (mg/dl) were 1.97±0.18, 1.97±0.16 and 1.98 ± 0.17 in the normal, osteopenic and osteoporotic group, respectively. The confounding variables such as age, the period of menopause, weight and BMI were controlled by ANOVA test, then the magnesium level in three groups were compared in the presence of these variables and no significant difference was found between these groups (P = 0.65).Conclusion: The results of present study reveals that there is not a significant correlation between the serum level of magnesium and the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women but further studies are recommended
