Abstract

Introduction: Placement of central venous catheter is an accepted method of hemodialysis in patients under dialysis. The appropriate placement of the catheter tip may reduce both early and late complications related to catheter. This study aimed to evaluate a new formula and find a reliable method based on surface anatomy for a correct central venous catheter placement in left internal jugular vein for hemodialysis.Patients and methods: In this experimental study, 40 patients with indication of CVC in and permocath insertion for hemodialysis, referred to Al-Zahra hospital in 2016 were selected, they were placed left-sided superior central venous catheter. Technique:Length of catheter was regarded as the sum of distance from skin incision up to sternal notch plus the total distance between left and right Sternoclavicular joint and half length of the sternum. The right atrium was the correct region for inserting the tip of catheter. Results: Thirty-eight patients (95%) out of 40 patients, aged 63.75 ± 17.96, were successfully implanted left-sided superior central venous catheters. No significant relationship was found between success of new method and age, gender, height, weight, body mass index and half-length of sternum plus the distance between right and left Sternoclavicular joint(P >0.05).Discussion: According to the results, new method was found practical and safe in patients who need catheterization, it was also regarded as an economical, reliable, simple, feasible method
