Notes : Sumac is of Iranian and Mediterranean countries native plants that in addition to the popular belief in being effective on blood lipids, its antioxidant and beneficial effects have been confirmed but yet no clinical study has been conducted in this field. We aimed to evaluate the effects of Rhus coriaria on on some inflammatory factors (hs-CRP, TNF-a,ICAM ,VCAM-1, IL-6) in obese adolescents. This randomized clinical and blind trial was conducted on 72 adolescents suffering from dyslipidemia in 2010-2011. After primary tests, adolescents were put in two case and control groups with the 36 people sample size in each group randomly. The control group received placebo and the case group the fruit of sumac plant which was provided in the form of powder in 500 mg capsules. The consumption of capsules was considered 3 times a day and the duration of the study 1 month. Lipids profiles were measured fasting at the beginning and at the end of the study by auto analyzer. Proinflammatory factors (heat shock C-reactive Protein, Tumor Necrotizing factor-a, Intercellular Adhesion Molecule , Vascular Adhesion Molecule -1, Interleukin-6) were measured at the beginning and at the end of the trial. From 91 patients who entered the study, 19 patients were omitted duct different reasons such as not- regular consumption of capsules and not referring for the follow up and 72 patients finished the study. The average of total cholesterol in case group reached from 204mg/dl to 181 mg/dl(p=0.006), triglyceride average decreased from 163mg/dl to 148mg/dl (p=0.017), LDL average in case group, with 21 mg/dl decrease , reached from 123mg /dl to 102mg/dl (p=0.000), but HDL average , with 1mg/dl lower than primary average which was equal to 44mg/dl, reached to 43mg/dl (p=0.649). Some pro-inflammatory factors [ICAM, VCAM, TNF-alpha] , had significant changes in the case group. Discussion and conclusion: It is suggested that this plant may be considered as a complementary measure in the treatment of blood lipid disorders and studies and that Rhus coriaria powder may have significant positive effects on lipid profile and some pro-inflammatory factors in adolescents which may be attributed to its polyphenolic and antioxidant content. Further studies are needed on dose-response and formulation optimization..
