There are few studies addressing the prevalence and risk factors for asthma among Iranian people. The purpose of this study was to identify individuals with asthma symptoms in Isfahan-Iran. The findings are compared to a previous study in Iran and similar studies in other countries. As a part of a population-based cross-sectional study, randomly selected individuals aged fifteen years or more, were invited to take part in the Survey, 3,770 individuals ( 96.6 percent) agreed to fill in the European Community Respiratory Health Services (ECRHS) asthma-screening questionnaire. This group consisted of 1768 male's ( 46.9 percent) and 2002 females (53.1 percent). The frequency of reported symptoms and possible risk factors are derived out and Odds ratios are also calculated to determine the association between current asthma , wheeze ever and possible risk factor. pirometric and impulse oscillometry measurements were performed for those participants who reported to suffer current asthma and/or wheeze ever, the findings are compared with sex/age matched asymptomatic participants as a control group. A total of 116 (3.1 percent) had Current asthma, 255 ( 6.8 percent) reported wheeze ever and 84 ( 2.2 percent) had a physician diagnosed asthma. Using logistic regression analysis: age(p<0.01), body mass index (p<0.05) , smoking (p<0.05) and cockroach in home (p<0.05) were significantly assiociated with wheeze ever .Risk factors for current asthma were: age (p<0.001), body mass index (p<0.02) and education (p<0.001), occupation (p<0.05) and cockroach in home (p<0.05). It is concluded that the prevalence of current asthma and wheeze ever in our population is nearly the same as western countries. The frequency of clinical current asthma had not change in the current study as compared to an earlier study in Isfahan-Iran.
