| Abstract

The increasing incidence of childhood obesity in developing countries is going to become an emerging public health problem. The role of dietary intervention with fruits containing vitamin C and flavonoid on the control of obesity consequences in childhood is not yet defined. Sour orange contains flavonoid, pectin and vitamin C. We investigated its effects of on anthropometric measures and biochemical factors in children with obesity. 60 overweight adolescents were enrolled in this triple-masked, randomized controlled trial, for a 24 months study period. Eligible participants were randomly assigned into two groups of equal number receiving daily oral capsules containing sour orange powder or placebo. FBS, LDL, HDL, TG, total cholesterol, Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 were compared between two groups before and after administration of medication. Of total 60 enrolled patients, 27 and 29 patients in the Sour Orange group and control group completed full 24 months of study period respectively. No significant difference was detected in systolic blood pressure, TG, LDL, HDL, ICAM and VCAM before and after administration of medication. Our study showed that consumption of sour orange extracts has no significant benefits on anthropometric measures and biochemical factors in children and adolescents with excess weight.
